From my experience and what other have written the Phillips 985 is the way to Go (this is what i use after some research). The panasonic though does DVD-R the Philips does DVD+R or +RW but it plays all formats back. it has firewire input if you also need firewire output youll need a model like the phillips 1500 (much more $). The phillips is superior to the panasonic and other brands from what others who have owned a few different models have indicated form actual use. You can burn live from the camcorder to DVD with this. But if you need DVD-R -RW formats (compatibility) then you will have to look elsewhere Frank Farwell
