David, I got a PowerBook 17" two weeks ago, the latest in a never ending stream of the current top end PowerBooks. ;-) The 17" is pretty much configured at the max already except for RAM. I would get the extra 512MB to bring it up to 1GB. Unlike past configurations, Apple has done the right thing and put 512MB in a single DIMM, so you only have to buy one extra 512MB DIMM. Mine was $149. If she wants wireless access, I'd get an Airport Extreme base station also. I've been pleased with mine and find I'm only doing wired connections now when I want to transfer 1GB or more of data over a network. One last thing would be a bag. I've been using a Tumi bag for the past two years and it barely fits in this. I highly, highly recommend a sleeve so you can use that as extra padding in the bag or by itself when you just want to carry the PowerBook. I used a Waterfield sleeve for the past two years with my 15" and got one now for the 17". Best sleeve I've seen bar none (www.sfbags.com). The rest is just what software you want to install and installing the latest updates. Mine came with 10.2.4 and iLife installed.
