Need help with PCMCIA memory card reader

Folks,

I have a 17 in powerbook running 10.2.6 and all of a sudden I am having 
trouble reading PCMCIA memory card readers. Today, when I inserted a 
memstick reader, it froze my computer. When I ejected the card, it 
Crashed the powerbook. And, when I restarted, the crash had screwed up 
Mail. It had lost all of its settings for any mail account except the 
mac.com account. It still had all the data in the Mail folder in the 
Library, but wouldn't do anything with it unless I imported.

I had this problem once before under 10.1.5 with a MMC USB card reader, 
but I can't remember what file I had to trash to fix it. Anyone seen 
this problem or can give me a hint on what pref file to kill to prevent 
the lockups from happening again.

Also, on a completely different note, iPhoto can only use the 2 songs 
it comes with for slide shows because it can't see iTunes 4.0/4.1. It 
is specifically looking for iTunes 3.0. Which, of course, is long gone. 
  Any suggestions for fixing this?
