This happened to me on a PB G4 1Ghz 17".
DVD Player would launch and immediately quit.
Others have this same problem.

My DVD Player works normally now.
In my case the fix involved typing a few lines into Terminal to disable 
VSP, which I don't fully understand, so I refer you thus.
