Shawn, I'm on your side in this exchange regarding the senseless accusations, finger pointing at Apple, talk of class action, etc., but you must admit one thing: Apple built it's reputation on "ease of use" and furthered that concept with the Automatic Update. Someone's grandmother who just got a Mac three months ago and has finally gotten up to speed with email, the web, sending/receiving photos, iChat, etc. may well be very surprised and upset to find out that her beloved new Mac is seriously ailing. Yes, Grandma should have read all of the fine print in the manual (oops, I mean help documents) about backup strategies, upgrade strategies, etc. but... You get the picture. It's a serious gaff by Apple. One that hurts them in many ways. One wonders about the breadth of their beta testing pool in terms of hardware and configs. Fortunately, the true value of lost computer files/time is usually directly proportional to user experience level and experienced users, while sometimes lax, at least know what they _should_ have done to prevent their woes. later, j mcd --- John McDaniel johnmcd at one.net ---
