You could buy an external preamp for the mic so you can still plug it 
in to the audio line in on your powerbook, although you will probably 
get better quality plugging into an iMic (sound in on laptops is 
often not very high quality conversion and is prone to picking up 
noise from other components around it on the laptop motherboard).

You can get tiny usb hubs that are about the size of a usb plug, or 
if you have a powerbook with a pcmcia slot a usb card for that.

Another alternative would be one of those microphones that has a usb 
plug on it rather than an audio plug.
