I had the same problem and according to MacFixit Palm has acknowledged an incompatibility with Panther. But I saw exactly the same problem when I did a archive install of Jaguar on my computer at work a few weeks ago. So I decided to ignore Palm's admission of incompatibility and just reinstalled the software.
