Reinstall the Palm software. I had the same problem and according to
MacFixit Palm has acknowledged an incompatibility with Panther. But I saw
exactly the same problem when I did a archive install of Jaguar on my
computer at work a few weeks ago. So I decided to ignore Palm's admission of
incompatibility and just reinstalled the software. It worked.
