Not just Americans but the modern English with their many variations, Australians and Canadians as well. Each has a vocabulary that has evolved from Anglo Saxon, Celtic, Roman, Brittany and Viking roots and has gone in independent directions. I imagine that is what you refer to as "English Forebears." There is no such thing as a "Bastardized Subset" just communities finding new and unique ways of expressing themselves over many hundreds of years. jg
