The easiest way to get around this: Make the default font in iChat 
something like Chicago, or another non familiar name.

I run Extensis Suitcase, and when I activate one of my Helvetica fonts, 
certain apps (Safari, iChat) could not handle the switch, and start 
showing garbage. Sometimes (with Safari), all I need to do is restart 
the application. iChat can't work with it at all.
