When you are in line to get your hand carry x-rayed, wait until the person in front of you finishes their x-ray before placing your powerbook on the conveyor belt. Oftentimes thieves will be in front of you and will intentionally delay you while your powerbook is finished x-raying and someone tries to grab it while you struggle to try to catch the thief. I bought a powerbook sleeve and leave the powerbook in the sleeve when I have it x-rayed. The sleeve also helps to protect your laptop while inside a backpack. I also have a Kensington Saddlebag. It looks like a backpack so it isn't as obvious to others that I am carrying a laptop. Plus it is also a little harder for people to try to run past you and rip a backpack off your pack when you use both shoulder straps. It is much easier for hit-and-run thieves to get you when you have a side shoulder bag.
