i have my tibook since late 2001 now ... i encoded movies into mpeg-4
for about 2 years. cpu activity during this process is pretty much
constant 100% and the process itself takes about 12-16 hours (i usually
do it at night)...the fan runs continuosly (almost) during that period
- especially in the summer with 90° outside ....
i couldn't see any effects yet of this activity, the fan is loud - but
not more than it used to be .... i found it great to tilt the mac a
little to make it easier on typing and to get more air to the
bottom.... also a metal sheet underneath would help i guess (better
heat absorbtion than the wooden desk)
i do not do movie encoding enymore, instead i work with my own movies in
final cut, which is also cpu intense, but not as much as this other
thing (i actually bought a windows pc on ebay to do the slave work)
