GarageBand delay

GarageBand has been fun to play with but there's one glitch I'm curious 
about.

When I monitor a live instrument while I'm recording, I hear a very 
slight delay. The second track is in sync, but I'm just hearing it a 
fraction of a second later. I had read in the past that Mac laptops 
and/or the  OS had QT driver issues where there was no way of avoiding 
this. Is that still true, or am I missing something here. . .
