I've got a very lazy powerbook, since it's almost always sleeping (up to 15 hours a day, or even during the whole weekend ;-) Starting from sleep is as fast as booting my C= 64. At work I have a Windows NT 4 machine that's always on. I just lock the screen when I leave the room, so the startup time on that machine is also a none issue for me. I really can recommend the sleep mode of your Mac.
