You could try taking the bottom cover off your PowerBook, and check the cable. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111923 for instructions on how to open and close the bottom; you'll probably need a #1 Phillips screwdriver. By the optical drive, there will be a narrow cable and a wide cable connected to the logic board. The narrow one goes to the optical drive; take it off by pulling up, and then snap it back down. (The wide one, FYI, goes to the PMU, inverter, and trackpad.)
