On a related note: My screensaver comes on when awakening from sleep. 
When I do nothing for a period of roughly a minute, the machine falls 
asleep again. This is fine with me, since I apparently did not want to 
work with my TiBook.

If however I press the button to switch users and then log on as that 
user, after the same amount of time, the machine invariably falls 
asleep again. So it seems that there are some issues with the 
screensaver on when awaking from sleep.
