I have been travelling with my laptop(s) for a long time now and have never had a real problem doing this. Just stay alert and make sure that no one gets in the scanner before you (this person can delay you while another on the other side grabs your laptop). Having said that, the TSA people have been nothing but careful with my belongings (I travel with lots of gadgets and get checked all the time). Don't worry about it too much and if you feel your machine might get scratched toss a piece of paper towel or that thin foam which your computer comes wrapped in on the bottom of the bin before putting the computer in it.
