I'm not the last source on this but I was around in the early days with this project and was told that it was taken from the McIntosh Apple. I didn't know of this type of Apple and only later heard that it was misspelled. I was never sure what to believe, whether it was deliberately misspelled as I think Jeff Raskin has said, or was an accidental misspelling.
