[Ti] SMART status failing: travelstar... upgrade?

I went to the web site and my serial # returned the result: "Return to place of purchase" which in this case was Apple in January of 2002, and I did not purchase applecare... which means the powerbook is out of warranty, but would that apply to the drive as well?
