I'm with Matt, I think you got this back to front. It was some externel 
FW-HDs which had problems with 10.3, not specifically the early 
TiBooks, at least not as far as I can remember.:-)

And like Matt I'm running 10.3.6 on FW 400 without any firewire problem.
