Have you checked the most obvious first?

Will the printer respond to the selftest most printers are able to do?
Have you checked the printer cable by withdrawing it and then reconnect?
Can you try with a different USB cable?
Have you turned off the computer and printer and then started the 
printer first and then the computer?
Is the Printer Utility not recognizing any printer?
