Now, what about if you missed your Applecare deadline? I had gone in to a local Apple store and also heard the same thing (I has swapped the drive into my Brothers Tibook, where it failed--had a 80Gig in mine); to put stuff back. But, I didn't get around to it on time--and it took a while to get my end time from Apple. So, I know initially I tried Hitachi but they said go to the OEM.
