What the heck is Target Mode?

I used my PowerBook as my desktop computer for a long time with the lid 
closed by plugging a monitor into the monitor connector. The PB senses 
this upon startup and does not turn the screen on.

Helpful also was the fact that I was using an old ADB keyboard with an 
ADB to USB adapter. The keyboard had a power switch built into it. 
Remember those?
