Are you using the OrangeLink FireWire 800 for Notebooks? This link on 
firewire-1394.com says it is now discontinued 
<http://tinyurl.com/dd3q5> and the SIIG FireWire 800 CardBus DV Kit 
is not for Macs.

Are there any other FW 800 PCMCIA cards you would recommend?
