Ok so the missing element in the puzzle then is the cable.

What are the chances of blowing up firewire controllers when doing 
things like this?

I've heard so many horror stories from folks in the past with problems 
with their firewire ports.

Since I don't have Gigibyte ethernet on the Tibook it does sound like I 
could gain by using firewire over ip
instead of ethernet.
