Apple uses software - OS X, iTunes, etc. to sell hardware - Macs, iPods, etc.. The market that Apple targets is highly profitable, although it's a niche. But there's nothing wrong with highly- profitable niche markets. I'll bet Apple's shareholders are one hell of lot happier than Dell's are after last quarter, even though Dell has the (alleged) all-important market share numbers. IMHO, Apple is way better off with their niche high-end market because it's what they do best. Apple simply is not a commodity champion like Dell or Lenovo where you slap crap together and sell it by the truckload. And that's what you have to be in the market share business where marketing wins over technological excellence. I think too many people make the mistake of comparing Apple with Microsoft in market share. Apple is better compared to Dell, HP and Lenovo in market share. -- Chris ------------------------- PGP Key: http://astcomm.net/~chris/PGP_Public_Key/ -------------------------
