Thanks, Malcolm and Matt. It's nice to know my dead modem is user replaceable with some modest skill. I want to take a screw driver to the problem, but there are some stress cracks on the case that I don't want to add more stress to. The new Apple USB modem is compatible, so I may go that route, unless I find more time and courage to do it properly, i.e., fix it for real. Eyes aren't that good, so I think I'll hold off on the self surgery route, and at $49 US, the USB modem seems an attractive fix.
