[Ti] screen shudder & shorting?

anyone got suggestions on how to address a couple of problems on my
powerbook G4?

The screen goes into phases of significant shuddering - significant
vertical lines flickering and a shadow effect of screened objects
(like crossed-eye veiwing)

This sometimes seems to be triggered by, and corrected by, pressing
weight of the fingers onto the titanium plate to the right side of the
mouse/track pad (ie above the superdrive).  Othertimes the screen
malfunction comes on without being triggered as such.

and the computer has been hanging - often related to the screen
malfuction, and often unrelated to the screen.

I've just erased the harddisk and done a diskwarrior cleanup to
hopefully improve things, but these problems seem to still be
happening. And the machine is out of warranty.

What to do???!!
