John, Space is important as but it should work with the 8GB For boot on your G4, it requires Apple Partition Map, your Mac Pro requires GUI to boot you mentioned it being Journaled but you need to ck, under options in the Partition window, if your F/W disk is partitioned as Apple Partition Map not GUID so it will boot on your G4 I use 3rd party memory, Apple will state what you said, but it works fine for most people, no problem, so I don't think that is the issue, rather the former that I have mentioned.
