can iPhoto make contact sheets from thumbnails?

I have lots of photos I'm trying to print to pdf, but the resulting pdf 
files is several hundred megs for only 3 pages.  It would seem that 
iPhoto uses the full image in the contact sheet instead of a thumbnail 
or appropriately scaled image.  Is there any way to change this 
behavior?

How about using AppleScript somehow? I know I could extract selected 
images and scale them, but wouldn't know how to put them into a contact 
sheet.

I can't really use third party software because iPhoto creates such a 
complicated directory structure, it wouldn't be too helpful for me in 
using the contact sheets in my image selection process.
