Apple Script and Function keys

Hello All

Can anyone direct me to an Apple script  tutorial on linking the 
Function Keys on the keyboard to trigger an Apple Script generated 
application ( like sleep, shut down, restart,etc)

Tried Google and Finder  Help,  but can not find what I am looking for.
