An ugly way that Adobe does stuff?

I changed the name of my Photoshop 7.0 application to Photoshop 7.0.1 and the icon went generic app. The dock icon also went generic. The application wouldn't open giving me a file is the wrong type error.

Changing the name back to Photoshop 7.0 returned everything back to normal!

What the heck is that all about? Is this the way that Adobe works or has anyone seen this in other apps as well?
