Yes, there is a way to make it stop. Which OS version are you using? In Panther if you go to the Mail Preferences>Accounts, under Account Information you will see 'Outgoing Mail Server', which contains a list of all present and past outgoing 'accounts'. Delete the .mac one. In Jaguar you can do the same thing, it's just a bit more time consuming and I'd have to look up the process in my archives.
