File Synchronization Software

I am looking into programs for synchronizing my desktop iMac with an iBook.
It's hard to evaluate these programs without actually using them long enough
to encounter some unexpected issues, and I've been disappointed in the past.
None seem to have a very useful way of dealing with files that have been
altered on both machines since the last backup,

Any recommendations?
