No real reason.

I upgraded to a  G4 from a G3 B&W and that is the way I configured 
drives on the ATA buses on the G3.
Always worked for me. And I just did the same thing( dumb luck?)

But actually, my prior  "research" via the MacWorld , MacHints and OWC 
forums identified many other guys who updated their G4s the same way in 
order to  make the Pioneer Superdive work with the Apple Combo Drive

BTW.  Being from the "old school" ( on Macs since 1985) I am completely 
unfamiliar with cable select CS jumpering ; that is, what it is and 
what is does!
I guess that you  cant teach an old dog new tricks!
