Sharpie claims that their pens are safe for CDs. That's what they claim. But, again, the components in the ink may react with the label surface of the disc. If five years from now you discover you can't read the CD to which you backed up your data because the permanent marker ink reacted with the disc surface, is Sharpie going to reimburse you? Personally, I recommend soft point, non-permanent (water-soluble) markers -- if you need to write anything on the CD itself. f
