My solution is to keep a copy of QT Classic in the wings for such an occasion. I then launch the thing (from within X's Classic Environment - no need for a restart - when I have a stuck AVI. It needs the right codecs, but these are available on the Apple web site (can't remember where though). If you have a registered version of QT (aka QT Pro) you can export the file as a .mov or .mp4 file to view in X HTH -- M
