[X-SW] slide show creator - recommendations?

Hello,

Using:  600 MHZ G3 ibook, 640 MB, running 10.3.9

I would like to be able to create a "slide show with music" that could
be viewed on either a windows box or a mac - the images are 200-400 KB
jpegs.  I'd like to be able to use different ways of transitioning
between slides and to add musical background for parts of show.  I tried
imovie (the version with panther)- for about an hour- but the quality of
the jpegs seemed to be severely reduced - the images were grainy looking
- other than that, it seemed to have the features. A friend suggested
using QuickTime Pro (which I don't have).  

Could someone who has done this (with a G3 mac) please offer
suggestions about what to look for and what to avoid.
