[X-SW] Permissions are hung up

(Running 10.3.9)

While trying to do a routine Permissions Verify/Repair - first with
Cocktail, then with Disk Utility, I found that the program couldn't get
past the "verify" status.  It just kept spinning and spinning, like the
SPBD.  After an hour or so, I had to Force Quit.

Looking through the Missing Manual, I couldn't find anything that
addressed this particular problem, so I'm appealing to the list
in hope that someone has as solution I can use.

My machine is running okay now, but it's probably a matter of time
before the clutter catches up to it and messes things up.

Please give me your ideas and suggestions.  Thank you.
