A question: did it also show your HD Icon? I have had this happen a few 
times. I simply click on the HD icon and it starts the normal way. It's 
almost as if the machine loses its startup preferences.
I would suggest you trash the following file: 
Library-preferences-com.apple.loginwindow.plist  from your HD.
