Mail question

I have a question about the Mail app in OS X.1.5

Sometimes I get e-mail with graphic elements (ads, pictures, cartoons) 
that need to be downloaded from the 'Net.

The question is, how do I d/l the elements? Sometimes the missives load 
up fine, but other times the elements remain just boxes.

What should I do to download the graphic elements?

The mail is version 1.1 (v481), on OS 10.1.5
