Nikon Scanner and Student Users

Hi to all List Members

I teach in a High School where we have recently changed to OSX and 
decided for obvious reasons to not have students with administrator 
capabilities.

We have now discovered that students can not use our Nikon Coolscan 
4000ED Film Scanner through File>Import in Photoshop.

Has anyone any experience with this? Is there something we are missing 
or have Nikon not allowed for this scenario.
