eMac can't keep time

Dear all,

I'm confused why my eMac can't seem to keep the time. The clock would 
speed up until it's woefully out of sync with real time.

Is it a weak battery or something?

I don't use network time. Should I use it? Will it cure the 
time-wonkiness, or is it only a treatment, not a cure?

I'm on an eMac with Mac OS 10.1.5
