Startup hangs on "Waiting for NetInfo"

Hi, 

I just upgraded my wife's G4 Powerbook (667) to Jaguar (out of the box,
whatever version that is--10.2.1?).

However, it won't boot into X. It hangs on "Waiting for NetInfo", the
luscious blue-worm bar churning away. I've left it for as long as several
hours, to see if it'll find whatever "info" it's looking for, but it
doesn't.

She had never booted into X before, though 10.0.x came loaded on the
machine; whenever I tried to boot into that, I got kernel panics, which is
why I got her the upgrade.

Any ideas?
