Do I need more ram?

I just bought a desktop G4 with 512 megs of ram. When I scan pictures 
at 600 dpi using Vuescan I usually have to restart my computer since 
none of my other programs will open after I've scanned a few pictures. 
I have used Vuescan's "release memory" feature to no avail.  It appears 
as though I don't have enough memory. Is this possible, or is the 
scanning software to blame? Should I buy more ram?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
