I have folders twice that size (over 7000msgs) with no problems. 
Obviously they're a bit slower to open than ones with 50 msgs, but I 
have no problems with this.

Yes, you can check as many different email accounts as you like. Just 
go to the "Accounts" preference and set up each one.
