I had a similar problem with my Canon S450 a couple of days ago. I used the print utility to clean the rollers and jets. Nothing helped until I turned it over and shook out a small collection of Japanese Beetles hat had taken up residence. I'm not suggesting you have bugs in your printer but there may be something down in the innards that causing a bad signal to go back to the iMac. I've also had problems when the paper won't feed because of a crimp in the leading edge. No, I'm not kidding.
