[X Newbies] New X user can't keep preference selections

I'd do the following:

1) Reboot and hold down the shift key as the machine starts up - a Safe Boot.
2) Open Disk Utility and run Repair Permissions
3) Reboot normally and test

If still problematic, I'd give Dragster

If I still had problems at that juncture, I'd consider wiping and 
installing from scratch as a time-saving approach...
