Okay here's a real newby question. I finally jumped directly from OS 9.1 to 10.3 Panther. I have a 400 mhz G4. I also have an HP Deskjet 870 Cse printer with a serial connection hooked to a Keyspan USB Serial Adapter. So the system recognizes the Keyspan but not the printer. Apparently HP doesn't make an OS X driver for this printer but the Pogue Missing Manual refers to something called GIMP-print which is supposed to have drivers for hundreds of older printers. I presume that it's part of the standard installation? When I go through the print set up rigamarole, I finally get to a window that says "printer list," and one on the list is "hp IP Printing." So I choose that. But there's nothing in the little window under that. If I click "manual," then I get another window that asks me to fill in "manual IP." (What's IP--Internet Protocol?) Anyway, I'm starting to get the feeling that the new OS is sending me to a new printer--either that or back to OS 9.1. Any advice? (And don't even get me started on trying to use my Umax scanner....)
