I'm not sure what "normal UNIX routines" you're referring to, but the rotation of the daily logs should take place at 4:30am (IIRC) and takes all of five seconds. It's hard to tell that it's even happened (but of course, if the machine is asleep it won't happen). It's not really very important whether or not this happens on a daily basis -- you can go a long time without the "UNIX routines" happening and nothing bad will come of it. I generally use OnyX or some utility like that to manually do the "UNIX cleanups" about once a month.
