This conversation has (naturally) shifted and progressed along interweaving paths, and has now ended up moving quite far from the original question I asked. I am not sure it would be any help for anybody if we followed yet another bend in the road - and this is basically because Word users who are happy with Word will keep using it, and those who are not happy will [probably keep fighting with it, and also] continue looking for alternatives... or hoping that the "next version of Word" will fix the many bugs and idiosyncrasies they find particularly annoying. I would appreciate it very much if someone could offer advice on how to tame Word, of course, but because this has very little to do with Mac OSX, I believe it'd be more appropriate if I asked this Word-centric type of questions on a different forum.
